Understanding Wood Cabinetry & Finishes

Wood cabinets, whether painted or stained, bring warmth and character to any space. However, wood is a natural material that responds to its environment. Changes in temperature, humidity, and light exposure can cause natural variations over time.

Material Characteristics

  • Solid Wood – Naturally expands and contracts with humidity changes, which may result in minor joint lines or shifts. Typically, these cracks or movements occur at joints where two pieces meet and can be minimized using touch-up kits.

  • MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) – Less prone to movement than solid wood but can absorb moisture and swell if exposed to excessive humidity or standing water.

  • Color Variations – Stained wood products may have slight differences in tone due to natural grain patterns, while painted finishes can appear slightly different between batches.

Effects of Light Exposure

Over time, wood and finishes may change in color due to exposure to natural and artificial light:

  • Sunlight Exposure – Direct UV rays can cause darkening or fading, especially on stained wood.

  • Aging Process – Some woods, like cherry, deepen in color over time, while others may lighten slightly.

  • Finish Differences – Cabinets installed at different times may not be an exact match due to natural variations and aging.

Care & Maintenance

Proper maintenance helps preserve the beauty of your cabinets:

  • Routine Cleaning – Use a soft, damp cloth with mild soap and water. Avoid excessive moisture.

  • Avoid Harsh Cleaners – Abrasive or ammonia-based products can damage finishes.

  • Dust Regularly – A microfiber cloth helps prevent buildup.

  • Control Humidity – Maintain indoor humidity levels to minimize wood movement and potential swelling.

  • Use Touch-Up Kits – Minor cracks or joint movements, especially where two pieces meet, can often be blended and concealed with touch-up kits. Some touch-up products are available at local hardware stores for added convenience.

Normal Touch-Ups & Adjustments

During delivery, assembly, or installation, minor repairs or touch-ups are common for small nicks, dings, or scuffs. This is a normal part of the process to ensure your cabinets look their best once fully installed. Professional installers will typically address any minor imperfections using appropriate touch-up materials.

By understanding these natural properties, you can maintain the integrity and longevity of your cabinets while embracing the unique beauty of real wood.
